Variable Pulsed Light (VPL) Therapy
Hair Removal
VPL therapy works by delivering rapid pulses of light on the area being treated. These rapid pulses of light converts to heat energy, supplying approximately 70 degrees on the hair follicle and 45 degrees on the skin. Heat makes the hair fall-out from each follicle, which occurs, about week or two after the treatment. VPL therapy for hair removal is quick, safe and painless. A series of treatment sessions is required to remove unwanted body and facial hair. VPL therapy doesn’t permanently remove unwanted hair but it can significantly reduce it.
Hair removal by means of VPL therapy: for men and women
The goal of variable pulsed light (VPL) therapy in hair removal is to destroy hair follicle preventing hair growth. VPL therapy is a light-based method that is most effective on actively growing hair. With VPL therapy, rapid pulses of light which convert to heat energy is absorbed by the hair and skin, it travels through the hair shaft down to the root and follicle, heat concentrations can reach to approximately 70 degrees which is enough to paralyze and kill the hair follicle. Doing this inhibits hair growth resulting to hair reduction.
What are the benefits?
- VPL therapy uses one of the most technologically advanced equipment in the aesthetic industry.
- VPL therapy is the most painless hair removal alternative.

- VPL therapy works well on many areas including the face, neck, chest, abdomen, arms, legs, back, underarms, bikini lines and nipples.
- VPL is safe to use for anyone with unwanted hair.
- Works for all skin types, but is most effective on hair that is on its active growth phase.
What areas are treated?
VPL treats unwanted facial and body hair. Most common areas being treated on the face include upper lip, chin, side burns, and cheeks. On the body, treatment areas include underarms, chest, nipples, arms, belly, bikini line and legs.
Treatment process
Prior to the procedure, the client is advised to stay out of the sun and tanning beds for at least 6 weeks. Any accessory and cosmetic product found on the treated area must be removed. The VPL machine has an applicator that is directly applied over the treated area; the melanin on the hair absorbs the heat energy disabling the follicle which prevents hair growth. After the procedure the client is advised to avoid sun exposure for the next couple of weeks. Favorable results will start to show after 3 sessions, if there’s minimal change, the treatment is repeated at regular intervals. Ideally, the treatment interval should be 4 weeks after the last one.
What to expect?
It is important to note that VPL therapy cannot achieve permanent hair removal. The goal of this therapy is significant hair reduction. It is also possible for hair growth to resume on treated areas since disabled hair follicles can regenerate, if this happens the treatment can be repeated.
